It took time. The grip of death is strong and dark magic is neither easy nor quick, but as the morning dawned and waned and threaded its way across the sky to noon, the mist cleared and the leaves bloomed dappled green and yellow again, and a lean man rose from the ground.

Not a boy, by any means. He was a full fifteen years older than Arin had been in his former body, the hair longer, the face sharper, the ruined eyes that magic had made new, but he recognized his hands.

The lean man looked down and flexed his callused fingers. They were still the hands of a mage, etched with dire portents and omens in indelible lines. He had no thought of obliterating them. What need? Even if someone, somewhen, cared to look, they would not see a deposed fugitive prince in his mature face. He would be plain Shadow, a commoner woodsman who had perhaps, once upon a time, aspired to be a hero.

He smiled down at the filmy-eyed head at his feet, with its attendant severed hands splayed at odd angles over the leaves. His head, or once it had been. Strange that he felt no disgust juggling his trio of severed parts back into the bloody bag, nor any horror. With the reward due him for these tokens he had so dearly bought, he would never go hungry again. He could buy a castle of his own. Servants. Pitiless soldiers. An Iron Army.

It was time to rebuild his father’s kingdom.
